NEDAP traveled to Albany on May 23 with fellow members of New Yorkers for Responsible Lending (NYRL) to unveil a model bill to address subprime mortgage lending abuses and stem foreclosures in New York State. NYRL's model bill, the NYS 2007 Responsible Lending Act, would require lenders to verify borrowers' ability to repay loans, and would create a legal duty on the part of brokers to act in borrowers' best interests. On May 29, NEDAP testified before a joint NYS State Assembly hearing on subprime lending and foreclosures, presenting NEDAP's research findings and offering guidance to the state legislature on how it can protect New Yorkers from predatory lending practices.
