NYRL Unveils Model Bill to End Mortgage Lending Abuses

NEDAP's Sarah Ludwig presents model anti-predatory lending bill with NYRL colleagues

NEDAP's Sarah Ludwig, with other NYRL members and a Brooklyn homeowner in foreclosure, announce model bill.

NEDAP traveled to Albany on May 23 with fellow members of New Yorkers for Responsible Lending (NYRL) to unveil a model bill to address subprime mortgage lending abuses and stem foreclosures in New York State.  NYRL's model bill, the NYS 2007 Responsible Lending Act, would require lenders to verify borrowers' ability to repay loans, and would create a legal duty on the part of brokers to act in borrowers' best interests.

On May 29, NEDAP testified before a joint NYS State Assembly hearing on subprime lending and foreclosures, presenting NEDAP's research findings and offering guidance to the state legislature on how it can protect New Yorkers from predatory lending practices.

Workshop Series To Wrap up with Spotlight on CDFIs

NEDAP's 10th Annual Community Reinvestment Workshop Series concludes on Tuesday, June 12, with "Community Development Financial Institutions: Current Issues."  This workshop will explore the current state of CDFIs in New York and beyond.  Practitioners from community development credit unions, loan funds, and microenterprise organizations will describe opportunities and challenges associated with organizing and sustaining CDFIs, and provide tools to help groups assess financial services and credit needs in their communities.  Featuring speakers from the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions, ACCION New York, and Project Enterprise.

NEDAP Film Series Features Documentary on Atlantic Yards

NEDAP's Community Economic Justice Film Series presents Brooklyn Matters on June 13 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Downtown Community Television Center, 87 Lafayette St.  Brooklyn Matters is a documentary that examines the driving forces behind the controversial Brooklyn Yards development project and considers the dramatic impact it will have on Brooklyn neighborhoods for generations to come.  Following a reception and the screening of the movie, NEDAP will facilitate a discussion with the filmmaker and community activists.

NEDAP launched the Film Series on May 9 with screenings of The Sixth Section and Sueños Binacionales (Binational Dreams), two short movies that feature cross-border organizing and economic development strategies employed by immigrant communities.
