NEDAP Consumer Resources Now Available en Español!

NEDAP's web-based resources for consumers are now available in Spanish!  Check out Recursos para Consumidores for self-help and know-your-rights information on debt collection, credit reports, credit scores, identity theft and other consumer financial justice issues.  Low income New Yorkers can also call the NYC Financial Justice Hotline for further assistance.

Film Series Heats Up in July

NEDAP continues its Community Economic Justice Film Series with a screening of The House We Live In, on July 11 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Downtown Community Television Center, 87 Lafayette St.    The House We Live In traces the roots of housing discrimination and bank redlining in the U.S. and examines how public policies continue to perpetuate inequality forty years after the Civil Rights Movement.  Join us at 6:00 p.m. for a reception and cash bar.  The film screening begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion with local fair housing advocates.

In June, NEDAP presented a screening of Brooklyn Matters, a documentary about the proposed Atlantic Yards development, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker and Brooklyn community groups.

Click here for Film Series schedule and other details.  RSVP to info@nedap.org or (212) 680-5100.

Meet the Interns!

NEDAP is pleased to welcome three summer interns:

Alexis Iwanisziw (left) is conducting research and field work for NEDAP's anti-predatory lending and immigrant financial justice initiatives.  Alexis is pursuing a master's degree in social work at Hunter College and previously worked at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Michael Mastman (center), a second year law student at NYU, is helping staff NEDAP's Consumer Law Project, and working on an array of legal research and writing topics.  Michael worked in congressional offices and as a line cook before starting law school.

Joe Taranto (right), an undergraduate in NYU's Gallatin School, is working with NEDAP to assist members of the Immigrant Financial Justice Network with research, community outreach and organizing.  Joe's internship is made possible through a summer youth organizing grant from the New York Foundation.

Community Training and Advocacy Highlights

In June NEDAP:

  • Made presentations on predatory lending in association with:
    • Locust Grove Civic Association, in Ozone Park, Queens
    • Federated Laurelton Block Association, in southeast Queens
    • NHS of North Bronx
    • Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corporation, in the northeast Bronx
    • Margert Community Corporation, in Far Rockaway, Queens
  • Debuted NEDAP's new homeownership curriculum, in a series of workshops for Chhaya CDC in Jackson Heights and Jamaica, Queens.  NEDAP's new curriculum is geared to low and moderate income and immigrant homebuyers in New York City, and focuses on people's fair housing and consumer rights.  It offers extensive information on how to secure a suitable mortgage and avoid predatory lending and real estate practices.  NEDAP also has been training Chhaya CDC's staff, which offers services in Bengali, Hindi and Urdu, to teach the curriculum to its members and constituents.

NEDAP welcomes your tax-deductible contribution, which may be made online or by mail.
