Getting It Done in Albany

Participants at NEDAP's Financial Justice Training Institute

NEDAP spent two action-packed days with groups in Albany this month, developing strategies to advance community financial justice in New York and beyond.

NEDAP held its first-ever Financial Justice Training Institute for community organizers and advocates.  The training exposed groups to big picture economic justice issues; ins-and-outs of state politics; and how to communicate effectively with legislators, media and other key audiences.

A slate of dynamic guest speakers included Uriah King of the Center for Responsible Lending; Blair Horner of NYPIRG; NYS Assembly Program & Counsel's Ernest Amabile; Bill Hammond of the Daily News and Jimmy Vielkind of the Albany Times Union.  NEDAP's next Training Institute, on shaping the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, will be held in spring 2011 in NYC - contact us for more info.

NEDAP's Susan Shin leading a group breakout discussion at NYRL's annual meeting

NEDAP also coordinated New Yorkers for Responsible Lending's annual statewide meeting.  More than 50 NYRL members participated in a lively day-long strategy session, sharing information and charting out the coalition's campaign priorities for the coming year.  U.S. PIRG's Ed Mierzwinski joined NYRL to talk about federal financial reform, and vital ways that state coalitions can help shape the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
