NEDAP Kicks off Community Economic Justice Film Series

NEDAP rolls out the red carpet for its new Community Economic Justice Film Series on May 9 at 6:00 pm at Downtown Community Television Center with a screening of The Sixth Section and Sueños Binacionales (Binational Dreams)The Sixth Section captures the cross-border organizing of "Grupo Unión," a group of Mexican immigrants in upstate New York devoted to raising money in the U.S. to rebuild the town they left behind.  Sueños Binacionales looks at the civil and financial obstacles that indigenous communities of Oaxaca face as they try to forge a life in the U.S. and provide for their families back home.  The screenings will be followed by a discussion with The Sixth Section filmmakers and community activists.  RSVP to info@nedap.org or (212) 680-5100.

This event ushers in a spring and summertime showcase of films that explore ways in which low and moderate income communities and neighborhoods of color are confronting issues of economic discrimination and pursuing self-determination.  Click here for the Film Series schedule, directions and other details.

May Workshops Spotlight Immigrant and Women's Issues

NEDAP's 10th Annual Community Reinvestment Workshop Series continues with two workshops in May.  "Immigrant Financial Justice Organizing," on Thursday, May 3, will highlight local campaigns to press for fair financial services access and reinvestment in immigrant communities, and describe ways that community groups can get involved.  Guest presenters from: Fifth Avenue Committee, New Labor and the People's Center for Economic Independence/Lower East Side People's Federal Credit Union.

On Tuesday, May 22, NEDAP presents Resources for Women's Economic Independence, a panel discussion that will address financial justice issues confronting low-income women - such as building a credit history, maximizing public benefits, avoiding predatory lending and understanding the benefits and risks of maintaining joint financial accounts.  Guest presenters from: Women in Prison Project - ReConnect, Sanctuary for Families, and others.
