Predatory Lending Legal Assistance Hotline
(718) 246-3279
Homeowners who are caught in predatory, high-cost mortgage traps should contact the Predatory Lending Legal Assistance Hotline. Some warning signs of a predatory loan include:
- Misrepresentations: The lender or broker was not honest about terms of the loan, such as interest rate, fees or total cost of the loan;
- Repeated Offers to Refinance: You were contacted by a lender or broker to refinance your mortgage one or more times over a short time period;
- Unaffordable Monthly Payments: You found it difficult to afford your mortgage from the start;
- False Information on Loan Application: The lender or broker asked you to be dishonest about your income or other information;
- Debt Consolidation: The lender or broker insisted on refinancing other loans and consolidating other debt, such as credit cards, into one large mortgage.
If you are having trouble with your mortgage, for reasons other than those listed above, you may still be able to receive assistance -- to view a list of foreclosure prevention counseling agencies, please click here.
The hotline is staffed by the Foreclosure Prevention Project at South Brooklyn Legal Services. |
